  • Writing headlines and summaries

  • Links and the ethics of linking

  • Production

  • Fact checking and copy editing

  • Speed kills: The 24/7 news cycle

Design and graphics

  • HTML and CSS

  • Web standards

  • Information graphics for online use

  • Animation and 3-D

This course:

  • Newspaper-style editing exercises (probably 75 percent),
  • Some magazine exercises (about 15 percent) and
  • One or two sessions dealing with online publications editing exercises

We'd love to have more useful things for them to do in labs that introduce Web editing tools.

Questions:

  1. What are the core knowledge and skills that all good editors need to have, regardless of the medium through which content is delivered?
  2. How is editing for online publications different from editing for traditional print media like newspapers, magazines and newsletters?
  3. How should students be preparing themselves to compete for jobs as online editors?
  4. What short- and long-term trends do you see in print and online media that are likely to affect the careers of our current students? (That aren't obvious and being talked to death by everyone.)
