Writing for the Web

  1. Writing for the Web
  2. This Boring Headline Is Written for Google

By Steve Lohr, The New York Times, April 9, 2006

I think it's important to make student produce work on the Web. Even using a free tool such as Blogger, they will learn some things about producing for online.

Newsroom integration

What does this mean? Is it the convergence idea?

One thing we know for sure: Students need to learn how to work in teams!

Reporting for the Web

  1. Learn how to gather and edit audio.
  2. Every journalism student should be able to do at least two things well (see below).

What grads need to know

Every journalism student should be able to do at least two things well.

Pick any two:

  • Report and write accurately
  • Take great photos and edit them for the Web and for print
  • Gather and edit audio
  • Shoot and edit video
  • Copyedit like a pro (including: write killer headlines; write accurate captions; know AP style by heart)*
  • Design pages skillfully for print or Web
  • Do investigative research and build databases
  • Design databases and integrate them with Web front ends
  • Program in a language such as PHP
  • Report and create accurate information graphics, including but not limited to maps
  • Design interactive packages, e.g. in Flash

*Editors should learn design, and designers should learn to edit.

Visual literacy plus verbal skills.
